What are the bonus tiles in Words With Friends?
There are currently only four types of bonus spaces found on the board each with a different color and meaning. These are very important to know and take advantage of because they can really boost your score and determine where you should play.
The first is the blue bonus square labeled DL as an acronym for Double Letter. This means that the score of the letter placed on that space will be doubled in value. Following that is the green TL square which stands for Triple Letter. It acts the same way as the DL space but instead multiplies the value by 3.
Next up is the red space labeled DW for Double Word. This means that the total score of the word is doubled when any letter of the word is placed on it. And finally, there is the most valuable bonus tile being the orange TW for Triple Word which triples the score of the entire word.
The TW board tiles are the most sought after yet the most difficult to reach since they are only spread out around the edges of the board. Make sure to take advantage of them when you can and steer away from setting up a move where your opponent can use them. Overall, it is a good practice to try and use at least one bonus square per move.
Quick Reference:
- DL = Double Letter
- TL = Triple Letter
- DW = Double Word
- TW = Triple Word
